1 & 2 watt DC/DC converters with re-inforced isolation

Re-inforced isolated DC/DC converters are aimed at the medical electronics and energy conversion markets. While patient safety and low leakage currents are paramount requirements for medical applications, IGBT circuits in the “high side” of power converters require maximum isolation voltages to overcome reliability issues which are caused by high dV/dt signals.

The series RxxP, RxxP2 and RV are based on a “break through” in transformer technology for which RECOM has filed patent protection. The design fulfils the UL requirements (Underwriters Laboratories) for reinforced class isolation, yet has a compact construction and high efficiency. The primary and secondary windings of the transformer are designed such that the magnetic fields efficiently overlap without compromising the clearance and creepage distances.

These converters are available with input voltages of 5, 9, 12, 15 or 24V and single or dual outputs of 3.3, 5, 9, 12 or 15V. Depending on the input/output voltage combination the efficiency is as high as 88%, a considerable improvement on comparable products with standard isolation. The ambient operating temperature covers the full industrial range of -40°C and +85°C without derating. Besides the higher isolation, these converters also show a reduced internal coupling capacitance of between 1.5pF and 12pF, ensuring extremely low leakage currents.

Both the RxxP and Rxx2P converters are housed in a SIP7 casing. The 2 watt version can also be supplied in a DIP24 miniature case to facilitate easy replacement in existing designs. The converters are optionally available with short circuit protection and are medically certified to UL 60601-1, CSA 22.2 601-1 and EN 60601-1. They are also certified to EN61010 and have a CB report. All converters carry the RECOM standard 3 year warranty.
