RECOM voltage converters are particularly suitable for use at high temperatures. Usually, the first cut-off in the derating curve will not appear until the temperature has reached +85°C, meaning that these voltage converters can operate at 100% of their nominal output up to +85°C; beyond that, the output performance load has to be reduced according to these derating regulations. All of these temperature-related figures refer to ambient temperature. In exceptional cases, the converters can be operated at temperatures up to +105°C; for example, a 3W converter can be run at 3W up to +85°C, but will still deliver 1.5W up to 105°C without risk of destruction. Using derating, there are many cases where RECOM voltage converters satisfy military requirements. We accomplish this using elegant circuitry and quality manufacturing, placing as much importance on efficiency as on the highest quality in selecting raw materials and manufacturing processes in the production of RECOM voltage converters. RECOM also provides optional heat sinks to increase performance in its voltage converters. This artificial increase in housing surface area ensures that heat produced by the voltage converter is dissipated as rapidly as possible into the surroundings by convection, resulting in an increase in operating temperature range. The operating temperature range can be increased even further by installing the voltage converter in an environment with a constant air flow. Apart from that, we also offer the option of increasing efficiency by customisation beyond the off-the-shelf components usually used; this also extends the voltage converter's operating temperature range. One of the decisive advantages of RECOM voltage converters is that metal casings are optionally available for output specifications as low as 1.5W, 2.2W and 3W; the metal used in these casings has significantly improved thermal characteristics compared to the plastic casings usually used in this output category, which means that the voltage converter is suitable for operation at higher temperatures. The lower limit of the operating temperature range for voltage converters is only determined by the ability of the internal oscillator to start safely; RECOM voltage converters are designed in such a way that the oscillator can reliably start at temperatures as low as -40°C.
